The libcurl configure script do some checks and adds -D_REENTRANT for the
systems that need it, and I think that is the correct approach for libssh2 as
well.

I'm currently trying to put together releases in two of the projects I
maintain but once I'm done with that I can have a look at doing this fix for
libssh2 unless someone else beats me to it.
